Mother Nature has really blessed the city of Kuala Lumpur with tropical rain-forests, lush green hills & lakes within few hours of driving distance. Lots of opportunities for nature lovers to escape from the mad rush of daily life and come back after a rejuvenating weekend in one of the nearby places.
One such attraction is Forest Research Institute of Malaysia aka FRIM. Its just 16 kms from city center. Although public transport is not available till the gate of FRIM, bus & train goes upto at place which is approx 2kms from FRIM. Cabs are waiting at those junctions and can take tourists to the FRIM. Although I prefer to take car as there are no cabs available while going back from FRIM to the bus / train station.
Spread over 515 ha land, FRIM's campus is surrounded by Bukit Legong Forest Reserve. There are multiple ways to spend day in FRIM. You can either choose to come here as a day trip or prefer to stay overnight doing camping. Major attractions are nature trail walking, 30 mt high canopy walking between trees, botanical garden, malay traditional home, arboretum. My favourites are canopy walk and nature trails walk.
One whole walking trails round in FRIM takes about 4-5 hours. Canopy walk is a time bound activity and remains open from 930 to 1300 hrs only. Further, being restrictive of number of people on a canopy at any point of time, it has long awaiting queues. So to avoid disappointment, please visit the ticket counter as soon as you enter in FRIM. Canopy walk gives spectacular overview of FRIM and KL city. This activity should not be missed at any cost. As Canopy walk is between trees, the entrance is at top of hill. So you have to climb up a small hill. During raining Canopy walkway is closed.
Being a part of forest reserve, all the trails pass through huge & tall trees and small hills. Further, inside the campus trails have been made for biking & jogging too. Localites living nearby often visit FRIM for jogging during morning / evening. There are marked picnic areas where localites normally come with families and enjoy the outing.
There are few restaurants, a club house and Malay Tea Center in the campus where you can have snacks & lunch. As I normally visit on Sunday, most of the times I have observed those to be closed. So on safer side carry your own food & drinks.
If you are a shutterbug then this is the best place to focus your lens at. This place changes it colours too often and soon you will loose your count on number of clicks. Often people regret about not bringing tripod, an extra battery or extra sd card. So if you have plans to visit FRIM and if you are an avid photographer then carry all necessary equipments and accessories
So guys wish you good luck and enjoy the beauty of FRIM
